Eco Village

Twin Oaks is an intentional community in rural central Virginia, made up of around 85 adult members and 15 children. Since the community's beginning in 1967, our way of life has reflected our values of cooperation, sharing, nonviolence, equality, and ecology. We welcome you to schedule a visit.

The Brixton Pound

The Brixton Pound (B£) is money that sticks to Brixton. It’s designed to support Brixton businesses and encourage local trade and production. It’s a complementary currency, working alongside (not replacing) pounds sterling, for use by independent local shops and traders. The B£ is the UK’s first local currency in an urban area and the fourth Transition Town to have its own currency, following the Totnes Pound in Devon, Lewes Pound in Sussex and Stroud Pound in Gloucestershire.

Eurostar 10 point plan

Refurbishing or de-branding and recycling used staff uniforms.

With the surge in popularity within retro clothing, de-branding staff uniforms could make for a really popular way of reusing clothes. A 'middle man' could potentially buy all old staff clothes and then re-sell them to make a lucrative business where everyone is a winner.

White Hawk Community Food Project

The Whitehawk Community Food Project is located on Whitehawk Hill in East Brighton on an old allotment site which had become disused in the 1990's. The site covers nearly 1 acre and has beautiful views of both the sea and the South Downs. It is now an established and productive community garden including fruit, vegetable and herb beds, polytunnels, ponds and a forest garden/orchard area. The site has been developed for people to be able to enjoy and participate in organic, biodynamic and permaculture techniques and principles. We aim to be an inspiring and valuable demonstration site where people of all ages can learn through practical hands-on experience.

[re]frame

[re]frame - Manila was a project that specifically aimed to assist a local collective of women embroiderers (PML) from the town of Lumban in the province of Laguna in the Philippines. The project intended to help open up new commercial opportunities and sustainable business practice for the local artisans, while staying true to their traditions, culture and heritage.

I think this concept has the potential to work on a much larger scale. The sort of thing it would need is a high street giant like Top Shop to sell a product produced by a community like this one in the Phillipenes. Fair trade products are really desirable on british high streets, people like to help and want to help but the key is to create a product that people would buy anyway fair trade or not. With the right product and the right highstreet shelf this sort of campaign could produce a sustainable income to communities which are on unfair wages and where work is scarce.

Lets Grow... a small idea which is now national.

'Its time to grow crazy! We have teamed up with store giant Morrisons to get kids planting their own fruit and veg in the brilliant lets grow campaign. Lets grow campaign allows kids to swap vouchers from morrisons for FREE gardening equipment.'

An example of a scheme that started small and has been taken to a national level
and could definately work in schools internationally, the success of this campaign is due to the endorcement of a trusted national chain supermarkert and a celebrity gardener. Two key elements that could be transferred to many campaigns to increase there success.

Born into Brothels

'Born into Brothels, by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, is the winner of the 77th annual Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art, Born into Brothels is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes.'

Syria’s First Lady launches Massar festival.

'The Massar Children’s Project in Syria has been officially launched by Syria's First Lady HE Asma Al Assad, with a festival in Damascus. The seven day festival was held on the site of the new Discovery Centre and featured children creating artworks, participating in science experiments and discussing their ideas for the future with the Massar team.'

An interesting idea, Engaging kids within local communities in political and social issues through means such as art, science projects, sport etc. It is an idea which isn't widely seen, allowing kids to have a political well rounded opinion: I think children deserve this acknowledgement within the political world.

Schemes like this could work in London. I think the key is to build a bridge between children and political/social issues by using subjects and themes which engage them. I think promoting this in schools would be a great way to integrate this into our society. It could be something as little as a twice annual event like a 'sports day'.

What I like about this scheme is that it is not a 'politics class', I think this could alienate children from feeling they are part of what is being discussed; it is just planting a seed of thought.

Cultural Innovations is providing all advisory services for the development for Massar, a unique children and Youth project aiming to use the process of scientific exploration as the vehicle to engage and empower Syrian youth to participate in Syrian life as active citizens, increase their capabilities and realise their full potential.
